Yet further controversy was sparked in the Catholic child abuse crisis when the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested the Church in Ireland had “lost all credibilty,” in a Radio 4 interview just prior to the most important celebration in the Christian calendar. Commentators noted that Pope Benedict XVI made no reference to Rowan William’s comments (for which he later expressed regret) In his Easter address, or the scandal that has all but engulfed the church. Some have critisied the former Cardinal Ratzinger for not doing more as the Vatican Chief to tackle the problem when he had the chance to. In addition to Ireland and Boston (USA), serious cases of child abuse among the Catholic priesthood have come to light in Germany (where Pope Benedic’s own brother has been implicated) and more recently in Brazil and Latin America!
